Debate Makes Us Stronger

One of my favourite parts of convention is resolution debate.

There is something powerful about watching members from across our union come together to discuss ideas, share perspectives, and collectively decide the direction of our organization. Thoughtful debate and deliberative discourse are how we grow. Debate challenges us to think critically, consider different viewpoints, and ultimately make our union stronger.

Behind every resolution are members who identified a problem, envisioned a solution, consulted with others, and put in the work to bring an idea forward. I have a deep appreciation for that process and for the dedication it takes to see a resolution through from concept to implementation.

Over the years, I have had the privilege of rising to the microphone many times to motivate resolutions and participate in debate. Those discussions have covered a wide range of important issues, including improvements to the Public Service Health Care Plan, taking a critical look at our family care policies, recognizing and valuing care work, strengthening PSAC's role in reconciliation, maintaining the strength and effectiveness of our Area Councils, and many other topics that directly impact our members and our union.

Not every delegate will agree on every issue. That's okay, that's the point. Healthy debate is not about winning arguments; it's about testing ideas, hearing lived experiences, and making informed decisions together. When we engage respectfully and thoughtfully, we build a stronger democratic union.

As we head into convention in a few short days, I am excited to listen, learn, and contribute to those conversations once again. The resolutions before us represent the priorities, concerns, and aspirations of members from every region and component. The decisions we make this weekend will help shape the future of our union.

So bring on the microphones, the referrals back to committees, and the points of order. Be sure to review the resolutions here.
